The short of it: 6 out of 8 Nations, mostly because of Natalie Portman’s performance
The long of it: Just like Darren Aronosky’s last masterpiece The Wrestler (which he considers a companion piece to the movie being reviewed), Black Swan contained a tour de force performance by its leading star; back then it was Mickey Rourke, this time it was Natalie Portman.
Most people know about my love for Natalie Portman. The Professional and Beautiful Girls provided a glimpse of her talent at such a young age. Black Swan is us witnessing what I believe is the peak of that talent. Without getting spoilery, the movie really is all about her and her descent into madness. And it is a powerful and captivating performance that just might win her an Oscar come March.
Other quick fire thoughts: the ballet performances in the movie were pretty good. I don’t pretend to be an expert in that form of dance, but I think even a know nothing amateur like me can tell it was a very good performance by all involved. And that much hyped lesbian love scene between Natalie and Mila Kunis… yowza.
So now Black Swan is off my list, time to get to my other Winter movies to watch: The Fighter, True Grit and The King’s Speech.
